The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Annual Conference & Expo is the largest gathering of early childhood professionals in the United States. This year the Annual Conference will be held November 7-10 in Atlanta, Georgia. DEY has been working with our colleagues at Alliance for Childhood and Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood in writing a response to the Governing Board of NAEYC, as they have rejected all proposals for sessions that we know of (except Diane Levin’s Beyond Remote Control Teaching and Learning) which have questioned current policies and deal with issues that are of a concern for DEY, such as the impact of the Common Core Standards in early education and the role of digital technology in early education.
We believe that NAEYC has strayed from its Statement of Philosophy and Values, which asserts that its mission is dependent on “valuing and respecting individuals with diverse viewpoints and perspectives who share a commitment to the education and development of young children.” Our aim is to help NAEYC play a valuable role fostering serious conversation and debate on issues in our field.
