This non-profit, grassroots organization was formed with the mission of stimulating adequate and equitable investment in all Colorado public schools, students, and teachers.
The organization offers ways for members to connect with legislatures, provides information regarding Colorado’s education funding crisis, and even has interactive maps and games that allow users to engage in a unique way with important elements in education:
Great Education Colorado began in a Denver living room filled with parents sharing concerns about the chronic under-funding of public education that was affecting students’ educational experiences, civic and community unity, and economic prosperity.
We have since grown to be a well-respected source of information and conduit of public input to the legislature and state leaders on issues around educational resources.
Great Futures Campaign: Great futures start with a great education
In January 2010, Great Ed launched a statewide coalition-building campaign. Together, this coalition advocates for an education system that will prepare all children for the challenges of the 21st century. Great Ed provides the staff and organizing tools to its coalition partners (already comprising more than 20 diverse organizations), thereby informing and activating thousands of supporters to advocate for a ballot measure giving voters an alternative to a continuation of the extensive cuts that Preschool, K-12, and higher education students will experience in the 2010-11 school year. For more information, go to www.greatfuturescolorado.org.
In 2016, in conjunction with other education-focused organizations, Great Ed launched the Great Schools, Thriving Communities coalition (GSTC), whose goal is to develop and advocate for policy that increases education funding. In 2018, GSTC spearheaded the Yes On Amendment 73 campaign, then the most comprehensive school funding initiative introduced in the history of the state. In 2020, GSTC supported Initiative 271, which would have raised $1 billion per year to recruit, retain, and pay teachers and education support staff.
Design a State Budget that Reflects Your Values
Great Education Colorado and the Colorado Association of School Boards (CASB) have developed an interactive online budget simulation that allows Coloradans to make their own spending and revenue choices for the state budget.
Great Ed and CASB teamed up on this project because we believe all state residents must understand Colorado’s fiscal challenges and all possible solutions. In Colorado, because of constitutional amendments, it is voters – not legislators – who make the most important decisions about how Colorado invests in its future.
