The Michigan Education Association (MEA) is a “self governed” organization located in East Lansing that represents teachers and professional public education employees throughout the state. While it requires that members of the association pay dues, members receive benefits such as legal assistance to better help members understand legislation, rights, and privileges in regards to the government and education, training opportunities, professional development, and help with financial planning. The MEA has a strong advocacy interest in legislation and offers easy access on their website for contacting lawmakers/elected officials (available to everyone, not just members) as well as transparency as to what MEA advocates for in legislation. MEA is also affiliated with the National Education Association, and together they advocate for students rights and opportunities.
