Parent Play Days at Northrop Elementary

Parents and children smile as they play at a table.During the week of March 27th, 2023 kindergarten teachers at Northrop Elementary, with support from Defending the Early Years, invited parents to join them in the classroom for a day of play. In recent years, teachers have been encouraged to embrace play as part of their classroom environment. However, with the rise of the COVID-19 pandemic, having students work in groups became limited as were outside visitors. Now with visitors being welcomed back into the classroom, the kindergarten teachers wanted to take the opportunity to show parents the immense amount of learning and creativity that is brought into the classroom through play.

Over three days, parents had the opportunity to engage in engineering, writing, mathematics, and literacy all through play! During Parent Play Days students were excited to share their work with ramps and blocks, work with shapes and playdough, and create a classroom restaurant complete with menus and signage. Parent Play Days was a strong step in engaging families and fostering advocacy for this important work. Thank you to DEY for the support in adding resources to the kindergarten classrooms to enhance this important work.
