Colorado to Open a New Department of Early Childhood Education

Governor Jared Polis on Nov. 3, 2021, hosted a public event to celebrate key milestones in the state’s effort to reimagine early childhood care and education for young children and their families.

Governor Polis announced the transition plan for the new, unified Department of Early Childhood (DEC) is pending final approval, and the process to develop the voter-approved, universal preschool program is now underway.

The Governor will be holding listening sessions around the state from Oct. 11-15, 2021 to share the draft transition plan and hear feedback directly from parents and caregivers, members of the early childhood workforce, providers, school districts, human services leaders, Early Childhood Councils, and other stakeholders in communities across Colorado

The Office of Early Childhood aligns itself with the goals set forth in the Early Childhood Colorado Framework to ensure all children are valued, healthy and thriving.

  • Early Intervention: Colorado’s Early Intervention program provides supports and services to children with developmental delays or disabilities and their families from birth until age 3.
  • Early Learning: The Colorado Early Learning and Development Guidelines are designed to describe the path of children’s learning and development from birth to 8 years old.
  • Resources: The Office of Early Childhood website lets parents search for Colorado Shines quality-rated programs and offers a number of resources for both parents and caregivers.
