Childhood, Democracy and The Road Ahead: Fighting for Equitable Early Childhood Education for All Children

A group of nine diverse children stand in a circle, reaching in to place their hands together in the center, viewed from below against a clear blue sky.

In every corner of the world, the belief in the power of childhood as a foundation for a successful life is universally held. The early years of a child’s development are not just formative; they set the trajectory for their entire future. These years are filled with untapped potential, waiting to be nurtured with care, opportunity, and resources. However, the sad reality is that not all children are afforded the same opportunities, especially in early childhood education.

Defending the Early Years was founded in 2012 to advocate for strong economic and social safety nets for all children. Equitable education can only occur when society meets children’s basic needs for whole health and well-being. Access to high-quality early childhood education remains out of reach for too many children, particularly those from low-income families, children of color, and children in rural areas. We are committed to changing this.

DEY has always believed in the importance of early childhood education as a democratic right for every child. We envision a world where all children—regardless of their zip code, their family’s income, or their background—have access to high-quality, affordable early learning experiences. However, achieving this vision is no easy task. It will be compounded with obstacles and deterrents from the next administration that does not often act in the best interest of all young children at heart. No matter who is in the White House, we must continue to advocate for policy changes that prioritize funding for early childhood education, invest in preparing high-quality early childhood teachers, and promote inclusive practices that meet the diverse needs of children and families. The road ahead is long, but it is one we are determined to walk together.

As we look to the future, we know that the challenges are great. The disparities in early childhood education are entrenched, and progress can sometimes feel slow. But we also know that progress is possible. The momentum for change is building, and we are optimistic about the future. With the support of passionate advocates, dedicated educators, and empowered communities, we can create a world where every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive from the very beginning. The road ahead may be long, but with persistence, unity, and a clear focus on justice and equity, we are confident that we will create a brighter, more equitable future for children across the country.

We cannot do this alone. Whether you are a parent, an educator, or someone who believes in the transformative power of early education and care, we invite you to join us in this critical fight for a just and equitable early childhood education for all.

Let’s continue to defend childhood for our democracy. Let’s fight for a future where every child, no matter their background, has the opportunity to thrive.

The road ahead is ours to walk—together.
